What does a 'orthopedagoog-generalist' (general educational psychologist) do? Explanation for parents

Clear information about the role of a orthopedague, how they differ from other care providers, and what this means for children and parents. This way, you know exactly how the support works and what to expect.

WHAT...

...is a orthopedagogue-generalist/general educational psychologist?

A general educational psychologist (orthopedagoog) is specifically there for children, adolescents, and their parents/guardians who face developmental challenges. This could include situations where children are not feeling comfortable, struggling at school or interacting with others, or when they have questions about parenting. A general educational psychologist not only has a solid background in psychology and development but also specific knowledge of parenting and education.

...is the difference with a psychologist, basic educational psychologist and a child coach?

(Child) Psychologist : Psychologists are experts in understanding human behavior in general. They focus on emotions, behavior, and thoughts. Traditionally, a (child) psychologist primarily investigates the reasons for certain behaviors and is less concerned with educational and learning processes. Of course, many psychologists now also consider educational, contextual and learning aspects, but traditionally, they have a different perspective.

Basic Educational Psychologist : A basic educational psychologist also focuses on the development of children and adolescents, but has not yet completed post-master's training to become a generalist. Although a basic educational psychologist may have extensive experience, they often lack the specialization(s) of a general educational psychologist.

Child Coach: A child coach offers practical, often short-term support for areas such as self-confidence and emotional coping. An orthopedagogue has extensive scientific training and also considers underlying developmental, learning, and parenting factors. Moreover, it is a protected title; only those with a university degree and a specialized postgraduate degree may use this title and are registered in a professional register. Child Coaching is not a regulated profession, so backgrounds and experience can vary.

...what does a orthopedagoog-generalist do?

A general educational psychologist/orthopedagogue looks at the bigger picture: the child, the environment, the family, and the school. This may involve conducting interviews, administering tests, making observations, and collaborating with teachers and other professionals. But above all, they are there to help children and parents find solutions that work. For parents, a general educational psychologist can, for example, assist with parenting questions and advise them on how best to support their child.

...what does this mean for children and parents?

For children, this means receiving support focused not only on themselves, but also on those around them, such as their parents and school. The goal? A positive, stable foundation where they can be themselves, develop self-confidence, and discover their talents.
For parents, a general educational psychologist is a source of support: a committed, expert professional who understands that raising children can sometimes be complicated and who offers practical tools to deal with difficult moments.

Whether it's uncertainty, challenges in parenting, or problems at school: a general educational psychologist helps children and parents to move forward with joy again!
